Description
If you're from Baltimore, you'll recognize the familiar glow of the neon orange egg custard snowball. Did you know that snowballs were invented here over a century ago? Snowballs have a lengthy history in Baltimore, going back to the industrial revolution.
In the late 1800s, ice blocks would be shipped from the North to the South, with commercial routes passing through Baltimore. On hot days, kids would beg for ice shavings to cool off. Their mothers soon began making flavorings to sweeten the ice. An early combination remains a Baltimore favorite to this day. The Baltimore classic is an egg custard snowball topped with marshmallow creme. Originating in the farmhouse behind The Peggy, the flavor has become synonymous with Baltimore culture.
The owners of three snowball shops share what it's really like to own a snowball stand. CJ Reuter, the manager of Summer Delights in Timonium shares how his family came to own the stand and their unique offerings. Dasia and Melanie Kabia, the divas behind Ice Queens put a New Orleans spin on a Baltimore classic by adding sweet cream to their egg custard snowballs. Christopher Heller recently purchased the oldest snowball stand in the country and renamed it The Peggy in honor of his great-grandmother.
