Description
During Anubhav’s Inner Engineering Retreat at the Isha Foundation, we had the rare opportunity to step inside the Mega Kitchen called Akshaya. This vast, meticulously organized space nourishes over 10,000 people every day, including residents, volunteers, visitors, and participants of various programs.
Guided by Omkareshwa ji, we began our journey in the chopping area, where volunteers worked in perfect rhythm, slicing and preparing a variety of fresh produce, from ash gourd and bottle gourd to pineapple and pomegranate. The quiet dedication in their movements reflected the meditative spirit that flows through the foundation.
Next, we stepped into the cooking section, where the air was filled with the comforting aroma of home-style dishes like bhindi ki sabzi, keerai sothi, idiyappam, and masala roti. Each meal is prepared with deep mindfulness and a sense of service, turning the act of cooking into a form of devotion.
Our visit concluded at the dining hall, where we joined devotees for a wholesome sattvic meal. Here, food is eaten in silence, preceded by a short chant that invokes gratitude and awareness. The atmosphere in the hall was calm and deeply moving, a reminder that food is not merely sustenance but an offering.
At the Isha Foundation, mindful eating is an integral part of the spiritual journey. Each meal becomes an exercise in awareness, from observing the colors and aromas on the plate to chewing slowly and eating with gratitude. It is an experience that quiets the mind, connects one to the present moment, and transforms nourishment into meditation.
