Description
We’re transforming a track rod off a massive mining dump truck that’s seen a hard life in service, taking it from worn and out of spec back to a component ready to go back to work.
The track rod is off a Hitachi EH4000 dump truck and is in for an overhaul to make it like new again. The job begins with a full sandblast using our RapidBlast SD140 dustless blasting system to strip away old paint and reveal the base material. Once cleaned back, every weld is checked using NDT magnetic particle crack testing. On a component this size, confirming structural integrity before machining is essential. With crack testing complete, our attention turns to accuracy. The pin bores look fine at first glance but they are worn oval and out of spec. We use our Sir Meccanica WS2 portable line boring unit so the pin bore can be line bored back to round again before being bore welded to rebuild the material and then machined back to their proper size. There’s also a hammered and misshapen area that needs welding up and grinding back to original shape.
There are a few unexpected surprise along the way, including a broken bolt left in one of the holes and an old welded-in nut that needs to be removed. Each step reveals a little more about how much work this component has seen. After the machining and welding is complete, the bores are finished, faces and chamfers are cleaned up, and the track rod is prepped and repainted. The end result is a complete transformation, returning a worn mining component back into a condition ready for service again.
