Description
India has launched E85 fuel, and it is around ₹20 per litre cheaper than normal petrol. But there is a big catch — most people cannot use it in their regular cars or bikes.
On 5 June 2026, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched E85 fuel in New Delhi. E85 is an ethanol-blended fuel that contains around 80–85% ethanol and only around 14–19% petrol. It is being promoted as a cheaper and cleaner fuel option that can help India reduce oil imports and lower pollution.
But E85 is not meant for normal petrol vehicles.
This fuel can only be used in flex-fuel vehicles. Flex-fuel vehicles are specially designed to run on different ethanol-petrol blends like E20, E85 or even E100. In India, vehicles like the Maruti Wagon R Flex Fuel and Hero Splendor Plus Flex Fuel have been showcased as examples of flex-fuel technology.
The biggest advantage of E85 is its lower price. Reports say E85 is priced around ₹82.12/litre in Delhi, almost ₹20 cheaper than E20 petrol. But the biggest problem is mileage.
Ethanol has lower energy content than petrol. Because of this, E85 may give lower fuel efficiency compared to normal petrol. If mileage drops by around 20–30%, then even a ₹20/litre cheaper fuel may not give a major running-cost benefit for many users.
