Alpha gal syndrome is a tick-borne meat allergy linked to the Lone Star tick. In people, a tick bite can trigger antibodies to alpha-gal, a carbohydrate found in red meat like beef, pork, and lamb. Hours after eating meat, some develop hives, vomiting, diarrhea, or even anaphylaxis.
But what about dogs? Can a tick bite cause a meat allergy in dogs?
In this video, Dr. Andrew Jones explains how alpha gal syndrome works, why humans react, and why dogs are different. Dogs already have alpha-gal in their bodies because they are mammals. Their immune system does not see it as foreign, which is why documented cases of alpha gal syndrome in dogs are essentially nonexistent.
That said, tick prevention still matters. Ticks spread Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and other tick-borne illnesses. Dr. Jones reviews practical tick control strategies, daily tick checks, and holistic options to reduce exposure.
If you’ve heard rumors that ticks cause food allergies in dogs, this clears it up. Red meat is not the enemy for healthy dogs. Understanding the science helps you make better choices for your pet’s diet and parasite prevention.
