To be fair to Ram, the idea behind the 3.0L EcoDiesel was excellent. A small-displacement diesel in a half-ton truck promised strong torque and impressive fuel economy — and on paper, it made a lot of sense. The problem wasn’t the concept, it was the execution. From the very beginning, the EcoDiesel struggled with reliability issues, many of them tied to emissions systems and the engine’s light-duty design. While later generations of the EcoDiesel were noticeably improved, the damage to its reputation had already been done. Yes, it delivered good fuel economy. Yes, Gen 3 was better. But overall, this engine was plagued with too many issues to truly succeed in a modern pickup truck application.
