Why didn’t Nazi Germany use poison gas or chemical weapons on the Eastern Front during World War II? Despite having large stockpiles of chemical weapons like Tabun and even early Sarin, Nazi Germany chose not to deploy poison gas against the Soviet Union. One major reason was retaliation. The Red Army maintained chemical warfare units, gas masks, and large reserves of its own. A German first strike would likely have triggered massive Soviet retaliation across a vast фронт stretching thousands of kilometers. There were also serious operational risks. Experiences from World War I showed that gas warfare was unpredictable, wind shifts could blow it back onto your own troops. On the fast-moving Eastern Front, chemical weapons could have disrupted German mobility more than Soviet defenses. German leadership was also aware that the Western Allies, including Britain and the United States, held significant chemical stockpiles and had warned they would respond in kind if gas was used. Even Adolf Hitler, who had been injured in a gas attack during World War I, was cautious about escalating into chemical warfare.
