Description
Every couple has them.
The arguments that never seem to completely disappear.
The differences you've talked about a hundred times.
The issues you've tried to solve, only to find yourselves right back where you started.
According to relationship expert Meg Tuohey, that's not necessarily a sign that your relationship is failing.
Many long-term couples experience what she calls "perpetual differences"—ongoing areas of tension that may never be fully resolved. The real work isn't eliminating every disagreement. It's learning how to navigate them without losing each other in the process.
When conflict arises, many of us instinctively become defensive. We blame our partner, escalate the situation, or turn inward and shrink. Why? Because underneath the disagreement is often something deeper: the fear of not being good enough, being misunderstood, or losing connection with someone we love.
Instead of asking, "How do I prove I'm right?" Meg encourages us to pause and ask:
• What am I feeling right now?
• What don't I understand?
• What skills might I be missing?
• If this conflict were resolved, what would it mean to me?
• How can I lead myself toward the relationship I actually want?
Healthy relationships aren't built by avoiding differences. They're built by strengthening our connection to ourselves, stabilizing the friendship between partners, and learning the skills necessary to repair, reconnect, and grow together.
You don't have to solve every problem to create a loving relationship.
Sometimes, the greatest transformation happens when two people stop fighting to win and start learning how to understand.
Watch the full conversation for practical insights on communication, emotional healing, and building relationships that last.
Personal finance, Relationships, Faith, Health & Wellness - it’s all overwhelming and there’s no clear map to guide you. But what if there was?
