Description
While Ford’s GTD is obviously the Mustang that has top billing in the current pony car stables, there are numerous options for those that perhaps don’t want (or couldn’t get) something so expensive and track focussed. This is the RTR Spec 5, a $160,000 Mustang, sanctioned by Ford, that will go head to head with the new Dark Horse SC and latest Shelby Super Snake.
The brainchild of Vaughn Gittin Jr - multiple drifting World champion, off-road racing champion, and self-proclaimed professional ‘fun haver’ - RTR stands for Ready to Rock. Henry Catchpole is probably more classical piano than AC/DC but gives it his best shot nonetheless and heads to some empty roads to see if the Spec 5 has nuance as well as noise.
The wide body kit takes direct inspiration from Vaughn’s drift car and perhaps gives GTD Touring vibes. But is it a case of all style and no substance? The Spec 5 certainly has plenty of power, with a Whipple supercharger bolstering a 5-litre Coyote V8 to 870bhp and 660lb ft of torque. It also has something that the GTD doesn’t - a manual gearbox option. Add in an engaging chassis (with a ride quality the belies the sump-skimming ride height) and you have a Mustang that is definitely worth paying attention to.
