Description
We went against the grain with this build - taking an adult XS frame and reducing the wheel size down from 27.5/26 mullet to 24/24 - we got told by SO MANY people that this build would not work....
'The bottom bracket will be too low'
'It will be too slack'
'He wont be able to make use of that suspension'
'He wont be able to throw the bike about'
With everyone sizing their kids up on bigger wheels to get better rolling speed and generally better suspension we decided to stay on 24inch wheels... use a longer frame but add huge suspension to handle the more extreme bike parks and features.
... so we built it anyways. We ended up building what we think is the best 24inch MTB going, based off Remy Morton and his build.
To the adult XS frame we added narrow bars - smaller than his current bars, brought the brake levers closer in, put on shorter cranks - back to 120mm down from 135mm and had the suspension set as best we can for his weight... then we took the bike out for a first test ride at Twisted Oaks bike park. The aim was more to see if he could ride it... but he ended up not wanting to get off it and rode it for most of the day!
With the test ride a success we headed to Dirt Farm bike park - we would have gone for Dyfi but we really wanted to make sure he could control the bike on rough surface and longer jumps and drops...
Next stop, Dyfi?!
