Operation Chastise, the “Dam Busters” raid: A Magnificent Application of Air Power

On the night of 16–17 May 1943, No 617 Squadron RAF carried out one of the most daring precision air strikes in history. Known as Operation Chastise, the mission used Barnes Wallis’ innovative “bouncing bomb” to target the vital Ruhr dams powering Germany’s war industry.    Led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson and overseen by Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Harris, the raid showcased meticulous planning, innovation, and extraordinary courage.     This was more than a British mission, it was a truly integrated Allied effort. Aircrew from the RAF, RAAF, RNZAF, RCAF, and the United States flew together in modified Lancaster bombers, reflecting Bomber Command’s unique international culture.     Australians played a key role, including FLTLT Dave Shannon, PLTOFF Les Knight, FLTLT Norman Barlow, and Australian-born RAF officer “Micky” Martin, later an Air Marshal.
