In 1918, as aviation was still in its infancy, the U.S. military explored an unusual idea — recruiting deaf pilots for combat. Drawing on a fascinating August 1918 Flight International magazine article, this video reveals how American army officers believed deaf aviators* might possess unique advantages in the air, including resistance to motion sickness, improved concentration, and fearlessness at altitude.
Although there’s little evidence that many deaf pilots were actually trained for combat during World War One, this experiment sheds light on the bold and sometimes unconventional thinking of early military aviation strategists. It also reflects the era’s drive to make the most of every potential pilot in a time of major conflict.
Today, while modern regulations may differ, being hard of hearing or deaf is no longer an absolute barrier to learning to fly. In this video, we look back at this intriguing chapter in aviation history.
* The 1918 text referenced in this video uses terms to refer to the deaf which are no longer acceptable. These terms are reproduced here only in order to maintain the historical accuracy of the report. For more information see: http://www.wfdeaf.org/contacts/faq
