What color is Mesa really?
Mesa is our 2-year-old draft cross filly, and she has kept us guessing since the day we brought her home. She is 5/8 Percheron and 3/8 American Quarter Horse, with a full-blooded black Percheron stallion for a sire and a gray AQHA/Percheron cross mare for a dam.
The confusing part is how much Mesa changes color from season to season. In the winter, she looks almost like a grizzly bear, with gray guard hairs and lighter hairs coming through her coat. In the summer, she looks much more like a bay horse with a dark mane, dark tail, black legs, and golden/red highlights.
Because her mom was gray, we have always wondered if Mesa might eventually gray out too, or if she is actually something totally different. So we sent a hair sample to UC Davis for horse color genetic DNA testing, and today we are finally sharing her results.
Before we reveal what Mesa’s color test says, make your guess in the comments. Do you think she is gray, grulla, smoky black, bay, buckskin, black, brown, dun, or something else?
We are also taking Mesa out into the mountains for her very first ride off the ranch, which makes this a big day for our young draft cross filly. Thanks for riding along with us!
As always — thank you for watching! God Bless, and don’t forget to KEEP IT WESTERN 🤠
