Carl’s father struggled with crack cocaine during this period, leaving his grandmother to raise him. Adding to the family’s heartbreak, Carl reveals his grandfather and his then-wife also used heroin together, with his grandfather later dying from HIV as well. Despite their struggles, Carl remembers his mother as a bright student at a prestigious Baltimore high school, underscoring the devastating impact of addiction on even the most promising lives.
