A critical vulnerability in WinRAR, identified as CVE-2025-8088, is currently being exploited by state-sponsored threat actors from Russia and China for international espionage. This path traversal flaw allows attackers to craft malicious ZIP archives that execute hidden code when opened, bypassing the need for a user to interact with an executable file. By exploiting a processing error within temporary folders and utilizing Alternate Data Streams, the malware gains the same system permissions as the local user to install backdoors and exfiltrate sensitive government data or intellectual property. Although RARLAB addressed the issue with the release of version 7.1 in July 2025, the exploit remains highly effective because many users fail to update utility software regularly. Security agencies, including the UK's NHS, have flagged the threat as widespread, emphasizing that anyone using versions prior to 6.23 is at severe risk of compromise.
