Description
Mike Tyson faced Tony Tucker on August 1, 1987, for the undisputed
Heavyweight Boxing Championship of The World, in what many people believe was one of Tyson's Toughest Fights. Tony Tucker came into the fight unbeaten with an impressive knockouts and a win over James Buster Douglas, yet nobody was prepared for what was to follow.
From the opening bell of round 1, Tucker showed he was in no way intimidated by Tyson and displayed some amazing Boxing ability, with fast combinations of punches and impressive foot speed and lateral movement that had Tyson unable to hit Tucker with any clean power punches.
Through the early to middle rounds Tucker stuck to his fight strategy which was clearly frustrating Tyson, causing Tyson to take wild swings that completely missed their mark.
The 2 fighters gave the crowd some great exchanges in close, with plenty of ducking and weaving as Mike used his classic Peek a Boo Boxing style, hoping to sneak in and catch Tucker off guard and launch a big uppercut.
Tyson's patience started to pay off, and he did get in some very heavy left and right crosses and some decent uppercuts, though, they did not seem to rattle Tucker at all.
The later rounds of the fight saw Tucker show boating by dropping his hands and daring Tyson to take a swing at him, which Mike Did, catching Tucker on the side of his left cheek bone.
Tucker nodded his head to say, Nah, that did not hurt, yet, upon slow mo reply you could see Tucker clearly took a heavy blow and was rattled by the impact of the punch.
The last few rounds of the scheduled 12 round bout, Tucker used his fast foot work to avoid Tyson, which may be a sign that he was weary of Tyson's punches after getting tagged a few times over the past few rounds.
The final round saw Tucker dropping his hands and sticking his chin out, challenging Tyson to take a free punch at him. Mike obliged and charged at Tucker catching Tucker with a huge punch, and again Tucker nodded his head acting as if the punch did nothing.
The 2 fighter gave the crowd some fast exchanges before the bell sounded to end the fight.
The judges scored the fight a unanimous Decision To Mike Tyson by a large margin which was probably due to Tyson being the aggressor for most of the fight, chasing Tucker all over the ring, with Tucker constantly backing up whilst throwing punches.
Either way, the fight was far better than most fight experts predicted, with Tony Tucker being way more competitive that most people would have expected.
Mike Tyson won the fight, but on the night, Tony Tucker won over the fans with his impressive Boxing skills and courage in a fight many now believe may have been the toughest fight Tyson has ever had in his entire boxing career.
