► The Met Police reportedly want the prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann to stand trial in the UK - but German law prevents the extradition of its citizens to non-EU countries.
According to reports on Tuesday, the Met is pressing ahead with plans to charge German national Christian Brueckner, nearly 20 years after the missing Brit’s disappearance shocked the world.
The 48-year-old convicted sex offender and rapist could stand trial if the Crown Prosecution Service can authorise charges. The Met has not officially commented on the reports.
If Berlin rejects the request, the Met reportedly wants Germany or Portugal to issue fresh charges against him.
Next year marks 20 years since Maddie went missing while on holiday with her parents and siblings in Portugal on 3 May, 2007.
