ENTRY IN MANIPUR During CONFLICT

In this video, I document my journey across the Mao Gate, the historic entry point from Nagaland into Manipur. As I travel down the NH2 toward Imphal, I take a moment to reflect on the complex landscape of this state and the deep-rooted situation that has shaped it over the last few years. Understanding the Situation: Manipur has been navigating a difficult period of ethnic and social transition since May 2023. To understand the current atmosphere, one must look at the long-standing history between the communities of the Imphal Valley and the surrounding Hill districts. The Root Causes: The situation stems from a complex mix of historical, demographic, and legal factors: The Land & Identity Debate: Tensions were heightened by a 2023 High Court order regarding the "Scheduled Tribe" status for the majority community, which raised concerns among the hill tribes about land rights and job security. Administrative Measures: Government policies regarding forest protection and the crackdown on poppy cultivation also contributed to a feeling of unease among different groups. Geopolitical Factors: The unrest has been further complicated by the porous border with Myanmar, which has seen an influx of refugees and added another layer to the state's security concerns. Manipur Today (2026): While a new representative government has been reinstated and significant funds have been allocated for rehabilitation and road infrastructure, the "uneasy peace" is visible. As you'll see in my footage, the heavy security presence at checkpoints like Mao Gate is a testament to the ongoing efforts to maintain order.
