Saint Euthymius the Illuminator (13 May): Butler's Lives of the Saints

St. Euthymius the Illuminator was one of the great monastic saints of Mount Athos, a holy abbot, translator, and defender of true Christian discipline. Born the son of St. John the Iberian, Euthymius helped establish the famous Iviron Monastery on Mount Athos and later became its superior after his father’s death. Under his leadership, monks came from Georgia, Palestine, and Armenia, and the monastery flourished spiritually and intellectually. Known for his humility, wisdom, and practical holiness, St. Euthymius guided his monks more by example than by words. He refused luxury, insisted upon charity and justice toward workers, and devoted his life to translating sacred Christian texts from Greek into Georgian. Among the many works he translated were writings of St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory of Nyssa, St. Ephraim, St. John Damascene, St. John Cassian, and St. Gregory the Great. His labor preserved and spread the treasures of Christian tradition throughout the Caucasus. After resigning as abbot so he could dedicate himself fully to translation work, St. Euthymius was later summoned to Constantinople amid tensions between Greek and Iberian monks. There, he suffered a fatal accident after being thrown from a mule and died on May 13, 1028. His holy body was returned to Mount Athos and buried in the Church of the Most Holy Mother of God.
