Description
The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, just released a dire warning about the economy. He's suggesting that the AI market is in a bubble, and that we could see that bubble pop in the future. Similar comments came from Jeff Bezos, who called it an industrial bubble, and Michael Dell, who suggested we soon might not need as many data centers.
The problem for the U.S. economy is that it has become reliant on the AI capex boom that started in 2023 with companies like NVIDIA selling microchips and GPUs and companies like OpenAI and Meta building huge data centers. This surge in the first half of 2025 accounted for nearly all of GDP growth, propelling the U.S. economy forward when other sectors like housing were struggling.
As a result of the AI boom, stock prices are now at a record, with 75% of the gains, 80% of the profits, and 90% of capex in the S&P 500 coming from a handful of AI-related companies. Meanwhile, Bain Consulting just came out with a study suggesting that the AI industry will need to generate $2 trillion in revenue by 2030 to justify all of this spending.
