In 1986, Pirelli developed the Scorpion BK specifically for the Lamborghini LM002, marking the birth of the now-famous Scorpion line. These massive 345/60 VR17 tires were engineering marvels designed to handle the 444-horsepower V12 engine and the vehicle's nearly 6,000-pound weight across extreme terrain. The most distinctive feature was the lateral winglets, often called ears. These protrusions helped the heavy SUV float over soft desert sand rather than digging in. Beyond flotation, the tires featured an extremely robust carcass reinforced with aramid to resist cuts and impacts. They were also among the first to offer run-flat capabilities, allowing the LM002 to continue driving even when punctured—a crucial requirement for its original military-inspired purpose. The tread design was actually adapted from the Monte Carlo intermediate rally pattern, blending high-speed asphalt stability with off-road grip.
