Description
In the year since Bashar al-Assad was toppled by rebels, Australian citizens are still languishing in northeastern Syria’s detention camps and prisons.
In 2024, Dateline travelled to northeast Syria to find Yusuf Zahab – a boy from Sydney taken to IS-controlled Syria with his family as a child.
When the Islamic State group territory crumbled in 2019, Yusuf’s mum and sister were taken toa detention camp for women and children. But 15-year-old Yusuf disappeared into the Kurdish men's prison system.
At one point, it was widely reported that he had died. But Dateline discovered him alive, in a Kurdish-controlled prison.
