Description
Today, on #WorldSlowLorisDay, we celebrate a milestone for the world’s only venomous primate!
Earlier this year, eight Javan slow lorises took their first steps toward freedom in Ujung Kulon National Park. After enduring trauma from the illegal wildlife trade and other human-related threats - including electrocution- these individuals were rehabilitated by our partners, YIARI, and carefully translocated by the West Java BBKSDA and Ujung Kulon National Park Authority (BTNUK).
Each loris has a story. Agam lost a finger after an electric shock. Anoda arrived with burns and a cloudy eye. Ipeh was found with light burns, but resilient. Through expert veterinary care and months of rehabilitation, they regained the strength and behaviours needed to return to the wild.
Their journey isn’t over. These lorises are currently adapting in special habituation cages, monitored daily to ensure they’re truly ready for life in the forest.
This is conservation at its most hopeful - where collaboration, expertise and compassion come together to give endangered animals a second chance.
Thank you to BBKSDA West Java, BTNUK and our partners YIARI for making this possible.
