Description

“There are no limits to the mercy of God.” The Church teaches this clearly and without hesitation. No sin — no failure, no past, no depth of darkness — lies beyond the reach of Divine Mercy. Yet Jesus Himself speaks of a sin that cannot be forgiven. How can both be true? Father Chris Alar, MIC explains that the so-called “unforgivable sin” is not about God refusing mercy, but about the human heart refusing to receive it. The Catechism states plainly: anyone who deliberately refuses to accept God’s mercy by not repenting rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1864). God never closes the door. We do. The sin against the Holy Spirit is final impenitence — choosing not to ask for mercy, believing we do not need it, believing God will not give it, or believing our sins are greater than His love. In every case, forgiveness is absent not because God withholds it, but because it is never sought. This teaching is not meant to terrify, but to console. If you desire forgiveness, you are already responding to grace. If you step into the confessional with a sincere heart, you cannot be guilty of the unforgivable sin — because you are asking. Divine Mercy is infinite. It waits. It pours out. But it must be received. “Jesus, I trust in You.”
