More than 40 MPs are calling for Keir Starmer to quit after he made a last-ditch attempt today to win back the support of his party, and the country, after Labour were hammered in the local elections on Thursday. Following his speech, Catherine West, and MP that called for him to resign over the weekend, urged the PM to set out a timeline to elect a new leader by September, branding his speech “too little too late”. The MP for Hornsey and Friern Barnet said the local election results, that saw Labour lose nearly 1,500 councillors in England and control of Welsh parliament, show Sir Keir “has failed to inspire hope”. “What’s best for the party and country now is for an orderly transition,” she explained saying she is now collecting the names of other Labour MPs to back her call. The names of 81 Labour MPs are needed to launch a leadership challenge.
