Description

This video is part of my Drum Teacher Rants series — unscripted, real-world thoughts on drumming, music, and learning, pulled straight from life rather than a practice room. Over the past half year, I’ve been taking drum lessons again, and it’s completely changed my perspective. Not just on my own playing, but on teaching, improvement, and why so many drummers get stuck without realizing it. Here’s the situation. There was a fast-growing weed coming over the fence from a neighbour’s property and tangling itself into our newly landscaped garden. Before dealing with it, I needed to figure out which house it was coming from — and that’s where things got interesting. Despite living here for years, I had no idea there was an entire little community of houses tucked away behind us down a shared driveway. From my side of the fence, I could only see a roof and the weed. When I spoke to the owner, he was genuinely surprised — from his house, he could barely see the weed at all. And when I stood on his side of the fence, my own house looked completely different. I noticed things I had never seen before. That’s the lesson. Things aren’t always what they seem. Perspective matters. And you cannot see the full picture from inside your own bubble. This is exactly how drumming works. You may be grinding away at something, convinced you understand the problem — while the real issue is obvious to someone standing outside your playing. This is why outside ears, teachers, mentors, and honest feedback are not optional if you want real progress. You can’t mix your own album. And you can’t fully diagnose your own playing.
