Description
This was around the 6/7th day after finding this baby raven, now known as Marcel,on the ground after a stormy night in the last week of august, after ringing around to several different native animal rescue services i was directed to a local vet.after a short examination i was told that i had found a baby raven, approx 35 days old which made it a fledgling, however given the time that it took for Marcel to learn to fly i would say that he was perhaps closer to 25 days old rather than the vets assessment.i was it would better if i was to return it to the place where it was found because " it was unlikely that it had fallen from the nest & the parents would be nearby and tend to it ".after doing as instructed i found that the adult birds stayed away and it was not until the 4/5th day that any attempt was made to approach him.naturally as a result i compelled to take over his feeding regime which demanded he be fed every 90 minutes from sunrise till sunset and he was fed using chopsticks in order to simulate a parents beak. he also had a talon missing from a rear toe that became quite swollen & infected in the weeks that followed needing treatment,it was paw paw ointment that cleared it up after having no success with other conventional treatments.Although the only sure fire way to accurately identify the gender of a raven is by blood/dna test Marcel has been declared a male for a number of reasons with the primary one coming from my 15 yr old daughter who has declared that " that bird has to be a male.because its just so annoying " fortunately she avoids Marcel otherwise he might think his name is/was " stupid bird " admittedly the poor kid was swooped by a maggie as a five year old & it appears that it has left her quite scarred.
on this day he chose to step on to my hand when offered to him and he moves up my forearm towards the elbow,at this point i am concerned that he may topple forward/back so i put my arm close to the ground,at this point he steps off back to solid ground where he has his food, via chopstick, which looks like mince/potato baby food mix.during the whole exercise i whistle the " food time whistle " which you can see him respond too, even after only such a short period of time [ PLEASE EXCUSE POOR PRESENTATION HOPELESS @ EDITING ]
