During a battle, an enemy bullet struck him directly in the middle of his forehead, shattering his skull and penetrating his brain. He collapsed instantly. His fellow soldiers, assuming he was dead, left him behind. But Jacob Miller was not dead. He regained consciousness sometime later, covered in blood. As he slowly tried to stand, he was hit with excruciating pain. The bullet had entered just above his left eye, completely blinding him on that side. He couldn't even open his right eye and had to use his fingers to hold it open. Realizing enemies were still around, he used his rifle as a crutch and began the agonizing journey back to his army's camp. Miraculously, he was found by his own comrades, who rushed him to a medical tent. The doctors who saw him gave him no chance of survival, believing any treatment would be futile. Yet, two days later, Miller was still alive, clinging to life despite being in unimaginable pain. Knowing he needed better care, Miller decided to travel to a larger hospital himself to find a surgeon. However, the surgeon there also refused to operate, stating that attempting to remove the bullet would kill him. In an era of limited medical knowledge, they simply dressed the wound, leaving the hole in his forehead open to the elements. This meant Jacob had to clean the deep wound himself every single day to prevent a fatal infection. He lived with a constant, debilitating headache. The slightest vibration from walking would send waves of agony through his head. The brain injury also caused severe memory loss, sudden confused impulses, and made him unable to work. He survived on a small $40 government pension for the rest of his life. Incredibly, 17 years after he was shot, broken fragments of the bullet began to fall out of the hole in his head on their own. 14 years after that, more pieces emerged. Jacob Miller lived with the bullet, the hole, and the hellish pain in his head for 54 years. Despite this, he managed to live a "normal" life: he got married and had children. He finally passed away in 1917, at the age of 88. While other soldiers may have survived head wounds, Jacob Miller's story is remembered for one reason: his unbelievable resilience.
