Description
Is India spending more on its past than investing in its future?
Just like a household that keeps taking loans when expenses exceed income, India is also stuck in a debt cycle. In 2014-15, interest payments were about 22 percent of total government spending. By 2023-24, this rose to 24 percent, and in the upcoming budget it is expected to cross 25 percent. That means more than one fourth of government expenses go only to paying old interest.
If we look at total revenue, nearly 37 percent is used just to service debt. At the same time, spending on infrastructure, railways, universities, and capital expenditure is also around this level. Recent budget discussions and fiscal deficit concerns make this issue even more relevant today.
