Description
What keeps a tornado from sucking a house of its foundation? Anchor Bolts…
These ½” bolts are embedded into the concrete ever four feet.
To install the pressure treated plates I line them up over the bolts and give them a good tap.
This makes a mark everywhere there’s a bolt.
Then I drill a 5/8” hole where the mark is.
I like to use #1 ground-rated pressure treated lumber on foundations and I seal all the cut ends and holes with a preservative.
I chip away any high spots on the foundation and clean everything off with a leaf blower.
Next, I place a bead of Lexel on top of the wall on both sides of the anchor bolts; and then I put down the sill gasket.
This gasket keeps air from penetrating into the house and helps block moisture from the concrete.
You see how the wood grain is curved? I want to put this frown down.
This way the board is less likely to cup.
The galvanized washers and nuts come in a kit with the anchor bolts. Depending on which seismic zone you live in, code may require a bigger washer or even a plate.
These are tight for now, but I’ll recheck them once the treated lumber has dried. @hausplans
