Description
2026 El Niño fires are destroying orangutan habitat again in Borneo, leaving orangutans at risk of being stranded, starving and pushed into deadly danger.
Please donate via or link in channel bio to help fund fire-fighting equipment, frontline patrols, hotspot monitoring and rapid emergency action to protect orangutans before more are driven from their homes.
In 2019, Junai was trapped in a tiny fragment of forest after the surrounding area had been destroyed by fire. He had nowhere safe to go. The forest he depended on for food had burned, leaving him homeless, hungry and at risk of conflict with people as he searched for something to eat.
His life was saved in a joint emergency operation by our partners, YIARI, and BKSDA West Kalimantan. After villagers reported seeing him, the rescue team found this large male orangutan stranded in a patch of forest surrounded by burned and fragmented land. Drone mapping confirmed he could not be guided safely back to his habitat. The only way to save him was to move him.
Fires destroy food sources and cut off safe routes through the forest. They force hungry, frightened animals into villages, gardens and danger.
Teams are working urgently to battle the new fires and protect orangutan habitat before more animals are forced into situations like Junai’s.
Please donate today! YIARI are in urgent need of your support!
