Officials say a major announcement is expected soon after the plan is presented to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for final approval. According to government sources, the plan aims to reduce the demand for imported petroleum products and Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG). Under the proposed policy, fuel prices may be adjusted every week instead of periodically, as part of a new pricing mechanism. The strategy reportedly includes three phases and dozens of policy proposals focused on conserving energy nationwide. In the first phase, energy-saving measures will be implemented across government departments, including holding official meetings virtually — similar to practices adopted during the COVID‑19 pandemic. In the second phase, private schools, universities, and hospitals may be encouraged to adopt online assignments and digital systems to reduce commuting and energy consumption. Authorities are also considering increasing the number of public holidays to cut fuel usage, following measures used during the pandemic. A meeting of the prime minister’s committee monitoring fuel prices was held on Thursday at the Finance Division, chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. Officials discussed the regional situation and its potential impact on energy supplies and domestic fuel demand. If approved, the new measures could be implemented immediately as the government attempts to manage a possible energy crisis.
