Trapped & Terrified: A Heartbreaking Cape Cross Rescue

It didn’t take long during our regular patrol at Cape Cross to spot this poor seal. A thick piece of discarded fishing line was wrapped tightly around his neck, cutting deep into his flesh. Because the line was embedded so deeply, we had to use our specialized crochet hooks to carefully reach and cut it away. It is always heartbreaking when a seal fights us this hard. He was terrified, defensive, and simply couldn't understand that we were there to save his life. While it’s always a beautiful, feel-good moment watching a rescued seal run back to the safety of the colony and the ocean, we never forget the reality of what we do. Rescues cause temporary trauma and pain to an already suffering animal. They are a treatment for a symptom, but they are not the cure.
