Description
National Gas had to set-up up an entirely new IT organisation following the separation from National Grid. As a result, National Gas successfully migrated to the cloud with zero disruption to operations, customers, or critical national infrastructure.
National Gas plays a critical role in the UK’s energy system, delivering gas to homes, businesses, and communities across the country and supporting up to a third of national energy demand at peak times. As part of a major business separation and transformation programme, National Gas needed to modernise its technology estate. At pace, at scale, and without disrupting the transmission of gas.
Following its separation from National Grid, National Gas faced the challenge of establishing an entirely new IT landscape while continuing to operate a highly complex and regulated transmission network. The programme involved migrating dozens of critical applications, modernising legacy systems, and creating a secure, resilient digital foundation to support future innovation.
Working in close partnership with Capgemini, National Gas designed and delivered a modern cloud platform that enables greater agility, improved security, and long‑term scalability. The transformation was delivered under intense time pressure, with significant financial and operational risk if deadlines were missed.
This case study explores:
• How National Gas delivered a large‑scale cloud migration with zero downtime
• The technical and organisational challenges of transforming critical national infrastructure
• How cloud modernisation improved security, resilience, and operational visibility
• The importance of a one‑team partnership approach to delivering complex change
• How a modern digital backbone supports the UK’s energy transition and long‑term sustainability goals
By moving from constrained legacy platforms to a modern cloud environment, National Gas is now better equipped to respond to emerging challenges - from cyber security threats to evolving regulatory demands - while laying the foundations for innovation across data, analytics, and future energy services.
Featuring insights from senior leaders at National Gas and Capgemini, this video offers a behind‑the‑scenes look at one of the UK energy sector’s most significant recent cloud transformations.
