GREATNESS IN HUMILITY | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (January 11, 2026) with Sign Language We commemorate today the Baptism of Jesus, which is another epiphany or manifestation of the Lord. The Gospel according to Saint Matthew offers a unique account. Here, Jesus and John had a brief exchange before the baptism proper. John, in humility, said it was he who should be baptized by Jesus. John after all preached that one mightier than him would come and baptize people with spirit and fire. Jesus, in response—also in humility—said: “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Later on, Jesus would speak highly of John and his work. When John baptized Jesus with water, the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descended. Then the voice of the Father was heard saying: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” The baptism of Jesus reveals God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Friends, the one spoken of by the prophets, has indeed come and lived in solidarity with his people. Truly Emmanuel!
