Description

Controversial opinion: your terrier is a terrier first, a dog later. Without allowing your dog a number of activities tailored to their breed specific characteristics and offering them to work for a variety of motivators tailored to their preference, you won’t be able to enjoy their full potential in other areas of life. Several times a week, I allow my dogs their favourite pastime, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Hunter gets to dig the ground, Irma gets to bite, Venus gets to chase. If I want to enjoy my personal favourite activity (walking) comfortably with my terriers, I have to allow them to live as terriers, too. Sometimes these activities can be combined, as long as they get their chance to be the menaces they were bred to be, they can agree to be a companion on my own adventures as well. Yesterday morning, my dogs did just that: digging, tugging, chasing. That afternoon and most of today, we went for walks and obedience sessions in the village. We all had a great time, and spared ourselves some unnecessary frustration. What breed(s) do you own? How do you fulfill their needs and what how do you manage their predispositions?
