Unfortunately, it is a sad reality of the times that unwanted puppies and kittens are consistently being left to die upon just being born. We are desperate to change that. We are working tirelessly with our neighbors to educate, vaccinate, and rescue the poor souls in need, but this objective we cannot tackle alone. About a week ago, just outside the front doors of a local PetSmart, someone left behind an orange DoorDash bag. Inside that bag were ten tiny kittens—alone, defenseless, and abandoned for an unknown amount of time. The temperature had dropped into the forties that night. It is nothing short of a miracle that they survived. Sadly, this wasn’t an isolated incident. Just weeks earlier, another litter—this time puppies—was abandoned in a storage tote in a similar way. Those puppies were lucky. They made it into loving foster homes and are now thriving, waiting for their chance at adoption once their medical care is complete. But rescue doesn’t always get there in time. And every time something like this happens, it pushes an already overwhelmed system closer to the breaking point. We here at Rescue Pets of Florida immediately stepped in for these kittens, committing to everything they need to survive and eventually thrive—full veterinary care, vaccinations, and spay/neuter before placing them into safe, loving homes. But care like this doesn’t come without cost, and right now, our need is growing faster than the resources coming in. We are entering “kitten season,” the time of year when, due to warm weather that encourages mating, litters begin to flood into shelters and rescues. It is one of the most overwhelming periods for animal welfare groups, and this year is already proving to be no exception. Right now, Rescue Pets of Florida is caring for approximately 230 cats and kittens and 70 dogs and puppies—and kitten season has only just begun. We are doing everything right. We host spay and neuter pop-ups three Sundays every month, helping between 90 and 120 cats each time. We work with county shelters to prevent overcrowding. We invest in prevention through community programs like trap, vaccinate, neuter, and return. But even with all of that, the sheer volume of need is so staggering that we STILL need support. We are a foster-based rescue, which means every single animal depends on a volunteer home to be safe. And right now, we are running out of space, out of supplies, and out of time.
