Rare deep-sea shark caught on camera for the first time in Antarctica

A sleeper shark has been filmed in the Antarctic Ocean for the first time, challenging long-held scientific beliefs that the species did not exist in such frigid conditions. The Minderoo-UWA Deep-Sea Research Centre captured the shark in January 2025 at a depth of 490 meters near the South Shetland Islands near the Antarctic Peninsula.
