Description

This time, the elder uncle has planted cassava in half of the vegetable garden due to the frequent heavy rains. He kept expressing concerns that other vegetables wouldn’t thrive in such conditions. Recently, he sent a message asking my brother to dig out some cassava roots when they were ready before he sold them at the market. He also instructed my brother to water the ground around the cassava plants to soften the soil, which would make it easier to extract the roots. As usual, my brother only remembers half of what he’s told. While he was digging out the cassava, he only recalled the part about the elder uncle’s message. Regardless, he had no choice but to struggle through the task with difficulty. Our elder aunty has gone on a holy trip to climb and worship at the Adams Peak temple, where the holy footprint of Lord Buddha is said to be imprinted on the summit of the mountain. My brother has already undertaken this very sacred journey with his friends, which holds great significance for all Sri Lankans. I wasn't keen on joining my elder aunty because my grandmother was unable to climb to the top due to her old age. Instead, I decided to send lunch to my elder uncle, who was all alone at home. I quickly made a cassava white curry to accompany the meal. My brother, being an expert in making mallum, prepared cassava leaves to stir fry for us. Since the mackerel was cooked as a spicy curry, I also made a fresh tomato salad. Knowing that my older uncle loves dry fish fry, I whipped up a dry fish chilli fry for him as well. The combination of dry fish fry and cassava white curry really complements each other beautifully. The next day, I decided to prepare a dessert for tea using the remaining cassava roots. If anyone ever tasted it, no one would believe that this dessert was made with grated cassava roots and coconut. It turned out remarkably delicious, and it is a very simple recipe as well. One must exercise caution when preparing any dish with cassava roots. They should not be used after a couple of days from being dug up. It is crucial to consider the health and safety of our loved ones while cooking, as when cooking delicious and healthy meals, certain practices must be adhered to in order to safeguard our loved ones at all times.
