How do you prepare ship-to-shore container cranes for future operational demands? At Forth Ports in Grangemouth, we raised two ship-to-shore container cranes by 2.2 metres to unlock new performance potential and improve terminal efficiency.
As Scotland's largest container port, Grangemouth handles more than 250,000 containers every year. Rising volumes and changing operational requirements are driving the need for higher stacking capability, improved clearance and future-ready infrastructure. To support these demands, the two STS cranes, originally delivered in 2006, were elevated as part of a comprehensive upgrade project.
The 2.2-metre crane raise increases clearance for larger straddle carriers and allows the cranes to handle ships with container stacks one row higher. This forms the basis for optimised container handling processes across the terminal. It supports higher stacking operations, enables smoother equipment movements and contributes to safer and more efficient workflows. This upgrade allows Forth Ports to strengthen operational performance while preparing for continued growth.
To minimise disruption to daily terminal operations, both cranes were lifted on their existing rails, with each upgrade completed in just six weeks. Detailed planning, precise execution and close cooperation with Forth Ports were essential to deliver this complex transformation safely and on schedule.
The project was carried out as part of Liebherr Transform, our dedicated service for upgrading, modifying and overhauling existing port equipment. Through targeted transformations, we extend the service life of machines and unlock new operational potential, supporting our customers in futureproofing their port infrastructure.
Watch how the upgrade unfolded and how it enhances container handling at Grangemouth for years to come.
