Officer Shoots Woman Firing Gun at Richmond Apartment Complex

* (Disclaimer: The content in this video is intended for educational and informational purposes only) Richmond, Virginia — On May 7, 2026, around 6:47 p.m., a man called 911 after hearing a gunshot inside an apartment where 31-year-old Jazmin Wooten-Mitchell was located. During the call, people in the background could reportedly be heard trying to get her to open the door, while the caller told dispatchers they believed she may have shot and that they could not get inside the apartment. As officers were responding, a second 911 call came in reporting that a woman was outside the apartment building firing a gun. When officers arrived at the complex a few minutes later, witnesses directed them toward an upstairs area while multiple residents were seen running through the property. Police body camera footage shows officers climbing the stairwell after hearing several more gunshots. Investigators said Wooten-Mitchell allegedly fired in the direction of an apartment and toward the stairwell area as officers approached. One officer then opened fire, striking her. Officers later recovered a handgun near her body and attempted medical aid, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Wooten-Mitchell was the mother of two kids, a 6-month-old boy and a 10-year-old girl. Her daughter’s 11th birthday was this past week.
