"A good day for Alberta and Canada": Smith announces "targeted changes" to environmental policies

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said that Friday was "a good day for Alberta and a good day for Canada" after Ottawa and Alberta agreed to establish a carbon pricing system and to set a start date for a new oil pipeline that will be used to export energy to Asian markets. "Today's agreement also results in Alberta avoiding a significant increase to the federally mandated industrial carbon tax, saving Alberta's industry partners approximately $250 billion in compliance costs over the next two decades to 2050," the premier said, adding, "under the new carbon pricing agreement, the industrial carbon price will be substantially lower than the previous federal policy." Smith continued: "The bottom line is that we're close to making Canada a global energy superpower at a time when energy security has become a top priority around the world."
