Description
In 1935, Nazi Germany launched the Paul Nipkow television station in Berlin, presenting itself as the first regular television broadcaster in the world. Its programs mixed entertainment, sports, service features and political messaging for the few viewers able to watch in television parlors.
Using 285 rolls of rediscovered footage from the Berlin Federal Film Archives, the film examines how television developed under the Third Reich, from early studio shows and the 1936 Olympic Games to reports from Nuremberg, propaganda features and broadcasts for wounded soldiers.
The documentary also shows the technical limits of early television and the ideological content behind programs that often appeared ordinary.
Through rare archival images and testimony, it explores how a new medium was tested, staged and used under the sign of the swastika.
