Throughout her tenure, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has sought to make herself the face of President Donald Trump’s mass-deportation agenda, joining a federal immigration raid in New York in full glam in her first days on the job and staging controversial photo ops in an El Salvador mega-prison where the administration was transporting immigrants with alleged gang ties. Noem’s leadership has also been marked by disgruntlement and leaks from the DHS ranks. New, comprehensive reporting from The Wall Street Journal sheds more light on Noem’s leadership of DHS, painting a picture of an agency in chaos and a secretary often at odds and entangled with her top aide and alleged romantic partner, Corey Lewandowski — accounts a DHS spokesperson has denied. The Journal reports DHS staff has experienced significant upheaval with Noem and Lewandowski either demoting or firing about 80 percent of Immigration and Custom Enforcement’s field leadership since joining the agency.
