'Sgt. David' on duty: Lorain High sophomore takes pride in keeping his school safe

He knows every hallway. Every staircase. Every room. At Lorain High School, that level of awareness is part of the job, even if you’re only 16 years old. “B1 West, boys restroom all clear.” “Cafe, boys restroom, all clear. Copy that.” Those are the routine radio calls from David Lopez, a sophomore better known around campus as “Sgt. David,” who takes his role on the school’s safety team seriously. David has long had a passion for school safety. Staff say even as a younger student, he looked up to the team and took pride in making sure his peers were doing the right thing — something they quickly recognized as more than just an interest. The team includes 12 officers responsible for securing the sprawling 450,000-square-foot building. Now officially welcomed into the fold, David helps check hallways, monitor restrooms and make sure students are where they’re supposed to be. FULL COVERAGE:
