Giant Humpback Whale Emerges Just 2m From Pier in Jaw-Dropping Moment

This is the incredible moment a huge humpback whale breached and fed just two metres away from a dock. Richard Lister was at the harbour in Ketchikan, Alaska, USA, on November 25 when the calm waters suddenly started to bubble. Dramatic footage captured the cause as the unmistakeable shape of the massive mouth of a whale broke through the surface. With its jaws wide open, the humpback – known locally as Phoenix – swallowed a big portion of herring before disappearing back under the water. Richard said: “It’s absolutely incredible watching something that size come up so close. “It’s amazing to see the bubble net forming and all the small herring trying to escape that maw. And how silently they move through the water. “If it weren't for the net and breach, you'd never know there was a whale swimming right under you. I'll never get tired of watching something so majestic. “On that feeding they were maybe two metres away from the dock.
