Byzantine Saints: Venerable Hilarion the New, Abbot of the Dalmatian Monastery (6 June)

Venerable Hilarion the New, Abbot of the Dalmatian Monastery, is commemorated on June 6. Born to the pious parents Peter and Theodosia, he embraced the monastic life at a young age and became known for his holiness, humility, and unwavering defense of the sacred icons. A disciple of St. Gregory Decapolites and a spiritual son of St. Hilarion the Great, Hilarion became abbot of the famed Dalmatian Monastery through obedience rather than ambition. During the Iconoclast controversy, he courageously resisted the heretical policies of Emperor Leo the Armenian and suffered imprisonment, torture, exile, hunger, and persecution for his steadfast confession of the Orthodox Faith. Despite repeated attempts to force him to abandon the veneration of holy icons, St. Hilarion remained faithful to Christ and His Church.
