Description
Fallen nuts (or capsules, to be precise) were collected one after another under a giant tree of Japanese horse-chestnut (Aesculus turbinata, family Sapindaceae) at a park. One large nut was usually contained inside each of a ripen capsule splitting in three. The fallen seeds would be carried away by small rodents for caching, which helped the seed dispersal of the Japanese horse-chestnut in return. The starch-rich seeds are edible for us, too, only after laborious processes of detoxing. Captured in the sunny midafternoon (around 15:50 PM) of late-September 2024 in Japan.
