Description

Did you know more than 100,000,000 sharks are killed ever year? That is obviouslv not a sustainable number, meaning they cannot reproduce fast enough to repopulate (sharks, generally have long gestation periods and reach sexual maturity later in life.) The reasons for this mass slaughter of sharks is mostly for completely wasteful, unnecessary, and cruel reasons: 1. Shark finning, for shark fin soup, an unnecessary commodity and outdated traditional symbol in parts of China. The demand comes from China, but most countries in the world are guilty of killing sharks, and cutting off their fins (often while they are still alive) to ship just the fins to China and discard and waste the rest of the body. Shark meat is very high in toxins like mercury, which is linked to Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's, which is possibly why most people in the shark finning industry would only kill them for their fins. 2. Sharks are killed "just for sport" in 100% wasteful archaic, cruel, and barbaric fishing tournaments. This is unfortunately still practiced in the southern states of Florida, Alabama, and Texas. 3.Marine debris. 50% or more of marine debris comes from commercial fishing vessels who regularly lose or illegally discard fishing gear, which can entangle and kill any and all marine life as those species die sharks may attempt to feed on them as they would naturally to recycle nutrients into the ecosystem, fulfilling their ecological role, and become entangled themselves. 4.Culling, the purposeful killing of sharks just to reduce their numbers also and archaic and cruel practice that kills many other species and is still in Australia and some parts of Africa. Simple ways you can help save sharks: 1. Send a letter to any store business that sells shark fins, shark meat, shark fin soup. (Pre-drafted letter available on my website) 2. Vote or introduce protection practices in communities or government where possible to stop the harmful practices noted above. 3. Raise awareness, about the importance of sharks and their plight. It all starts with education and it's continuously needed to combat the generational damage. 4. Dont support the seafood industry
