The correct name is “Bayati,” which is the older and more accurate designation. This maqam is present across many regions, with each area performing it in its own distinct style—such as in Iraq, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the Maghreb, and Turkey. Despite stylistic differences, its core tonal structure remains nearly the same. Many Qurra’, especially Egyptian reciters, often begin their recitation with Bayati and may also conclude with it. The maqam is characterized by dignity, richness, and expressive depth. Its personality changes depending on whether it is performed in the lower register (qarar) or the higher register (jawab): in the lower register it feels calm, grounded, and settled, while in the higher register it allows for more variation and movement. Bayati is considered one of the comprehensive maqamat in terms of expression. It can convey joy, sadness, and longing alike. Due to its structure, many secondary maqamat branch out from it, depending on which upper tonal combinations are incorporated, such as Nahawand, Ajam, or Hijaz. The identity of the maqam remains centered on its note of stability and resolution. Several well-known reciters are recognized for their frequent use of Bayati, including Sheikh Muhammad Ayyub, the Egyptian Qurra’, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Khayyat, and Sheikh Al-Muaiqly. Bayati is also appreciated in anashid for its softness and delicacy. A key feature of this maqam is its lowered second degree by a quarter tone, which gives it its distinctly authentic Arab character. This quarter-tone interval distinguishes it from Western musical systems, which are primarily based on major (Ajam) and minor (Nahawand) scales. With familiarity and repeated listening, this sound becomes natural and appreciated. You are the Light of the heavens and the earth and all who are within them. And to You belongs all praise. You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all who are within them. And to You belongs all praise. You are the Truth, Your promise is true, meeting You is true, Paradise is true, Hellfire is true, the prophets are true, the Hour is true, and Muhammad is true. O Allah, to You we submit, in You we believe, upon You we rely, to You we repent, and by Your help we argue and judge. So forgive us for what we have sent forth, for what we have delayed, for what we have hidden, and for what we have made public. You are our God; there is no god except You. *Transliteration* Allāhumma laka al-ḥamdu, anta nūru as-samāwāti wa-al-arḍi wa-man fīhinna, wa-laka al-ḥamdu, anta qayyūmu as-samāwāti wa-al-arḍi wa-man fīhinna, wa-laka al-ḥamdu, anta al-ḥaqqu, wa-waʿduka al-ḥaqqu, wa-liqāʾuka ḥaqqun, wa-al-jannatu ḥaqqun, wa-an-nāru ḥaqqun, wa-an-nabiyyūna ḥaqqun, wa-as-sāʿatu ḥaqqun, wa-Muḥammadun ḥaqqun.
