Maqam Bayati is one of the most well-known and widely used maqamat. The correct name is “Bayati,” which is the older and more accurate designation. This maqam is present across many regions, with each area performing it in its own distinct style—such as in Iraq, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the Maghreb, and Turkey. Despite stylistic differences, its core tonal structure remains nearly the same.
Many Qurra’, especially Egyptian reciters, often begin their recitation with Bayati and may also conclude with it. The maqam is characterized by dignity, richness, and expressive depth. Its personality changes depending on whether it is performed in the lower register (qarar) or the higher register (jawab): in the lower register it feels calm, grounded, and settled, while in the higher register it allows for more variation and movement.
Bayati is considered one of the comprehensive maqamat in terms of expression. It can convey joy, sadness, and longing alike. Due to its structure, many secondary maqamat branch out from it, depending on which upper tonal combinations are incorporated, such as Nahawand, Ajam, or Hijaz.
